What’s the deal with Blu-ray?

Many of our customers ask us if they should bother adding a Blu-ray player to their system. The answer is…it depends. If you really enjoy watching movies and you have an HDTV that is 42” or larger with a surround sound system, then adding a Blu-ray player will definitely enhance your viewing experience. If your TV is on the smaller side, or you sit far away from your TV, then the increase in resolution that Blu-ray offers will be less noticeable. If you have a home theater with a large TV or projector then Blu-ray is an absolute must have. Blu-ray discs also contain new surround sound formats such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio which offer increased sound quality over standard DVD.

Another concern that comes up is the long-term viability of Blu-ray in light of the growing popularity of downloadable HD movies from services like Vudu or the iTunes store. The truth is that all “HD” movies are not created equal. A Blu-ray disc can store up to 10 times the amount of information than is currently contained in a downloadable movie file. This means that the Blu-ray version of a movie will have a sharper, more colorful picture and more detailed and enveloping sound than a downloaded version. Our opinion is that at some point downloaded media will completely replace physical media, but for right now and for the foreseeable future Blu-ray offers by far the best picture and sound quality available to consumers.
